Meet Benton Sawrey
Benton Sawrey is a transactional and litigation attorney with over a decade of experience helping small businesses and farmers across eastern-North Carolina. Benton currently dedicates a significant part of his litigation practice to helping landowners in eminent domain cases against the Department of Transportation and utility companies. He has represented clients in a wide variety of different types of takings and successfully obtained significant judgments where the state had undervalued the seizure. In addition to eminent domain work, Benton has extensive experience in fiduciary litigation, will caveats, trust disputes, shareholder and membership disputes, and real property actions. Benton also regularly works with small and mid-sized business owners on strategic acquisitions. He has advised dozens of companies in transactions over the last decade on tax strategies and risk.
Benton is a native of Smithfield and attended Johnston County public schools before college. He attended North Carolina State University and then obtained a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he served as editor-in-chief of a journal. Benton has shown a commitment to public service outside of his legal practice and has been appointed or elected to a number of different positions. In his free time, Benton enjoys bird hunting and watching NC State basketball.
